Don’t be a dick with your denim

Denim Care

Do not wash your denim immediately.

You must wear it in before washing to allow some of the dye to wear off naturally, rather than more drastically in the wash. We recommend a minimum of 14 full days of wear, but really the longer you wait the better.

All our denim is raw (not colourfast) and your approach to washing will either make it look great or ruin it.

Why is HebTroCo denim not colourfast?

It uses harmful chemical processes that go against our sustainability aims. Your denim is raw and will look better in the long run.

How long should I wait before the first Wash?

For the best fades, wear your jeans for six months before the first wash so the denim has chance to fade on the creases developed by your routine. After this you can wash them more frequently without losing the original contrast. If you can’t wait six months, wear for a minimum of 14 full days.

Should I just buy another pair?

I mean we're not going to say no... Rotating multiple pairs of jeans is a good way to accommodate the wash/dry routine. Infrequent washing is good for your jeans and saves water.

Should I just leave them on the line for a bit?

Good idea! airing your jeans outside is an effective way to freshen them up.

Turn up or Turn down?

Turn-up your jeans for fine adjustment of the leg length. Sweep dust and dirt out of the turn-ups to prevent abrasion.

Just give them a wipe?

Gentle spot clean stains with a damp cloth to save a full wash.

When I do Wash them - Will they shrink?

Our denim is sanforised so first wash shrinkage is minimal. For jeans, expect up to 1 inch shrinkage in the length only. We’ve added extra length in the leg to allow for this.

Wash Guide

Machine or hand wash?

Hand washing is gentler and puts you in control. Machine washing is easier but riskier – follow the rules or risk ruining your denim.

Hand

Recommended for first wash!

  1. Lukewarm water in bath/bowl.
  2. Use a gentle non bio detergent like Clean Jeans. No stain removers/bleach.
  3. Agitate water.
  4. Submerge denim.
  5. Soak: 30 mins.
  6. Agitate but don’t squeeze.
  7. Rinse in cold water.
  8. Soak in cold water: 10 mins.
  9. Smooth flat by hand and stretch leg seams to prevent shrinkage.
  10. Drip dry on an airer or washing line. Do not tumble dry.

Machine

  1. Turn inside out.
  2. 30ºC maximum.
  3. Use a gentle non bio detergent like Clean Jeans. No stain removers/bleach.
  4. Do not spin.
  5. Do not leave your denim sat in the machine when the cycle ends. This can create unsightly faded crease marks!
  6. Smooth flat by hand and stretch leg seams to prevent shrinkage.
  7. Drip dry on an airer or washing line. Do not tumble dry.
